Ummm... white jeans and a white denim jacket? Really? I wonder why Oprah put those on the list.
White jeans and a white denim jacket are wardrobe staples?? Since when are either of those things especially flattering? I would replace those with a white button down shirt and a great-fitting white or black t-shirt.
i'm sorry - i have a toddler. neither white jeans or a white jean jacket are going to last too long in my world. obviously oprah doesn't have a toddler.
i don't have a trench coat, but i have some lovely winter wool coats.
i have black trousers, tunics, dark jeans, black dress, black skirt...
and cashmere? i have sjp's bitten cashmere sweaters, which while flattering and all, are the scratchiest darn cashmere i've ever had!
I think any of us with small children need to pass on the white jeans for sure. I haven't even seen a white denim jacket in the stores yet, but probably won't be getting one--it gets too warm here in Texas to wear a jacket very long into the spring, and it doesn't seem very "fallish" to me.
I have 1,2,3,6,7,9 and 4 if a tunic includes a babydoll top with a empire waistband. I want to get a cashmere sweater but see my excuse above about toddlers!
I hve 2,3,4,5,7,9 and am currently shopping for #1. I have a little one as well, but beyond practicality I think that white jeans and white denim jackets are awfully ugly things. I'll also go for the white button down and perhaps a classic shirt, both of which I have.
And ick, I can't stand the feel of cashmere - anything wool is utterly beyond me. So I have fine knit cotton sweaters with a bit of stretch in them and they work beautifully... and can go in the washing machine.
What's with all the white? Does Oprah not have a toddler? OR EAT? I spill food on myself constantly and my kid is a KID. Plus, white denim looks weird on most people.
To answer your question, though... I have a trench coat (two sizes too small but I am steadily losing baby weight), a grey turtleneck (close enough), and dark jeans. Well, jeans. I have an awesome black skirt that is now way too big for me. I love it enough that I will probably have it altered when I am done losing weight. It needed to be hemmed anyway. And I have a cashmere sweater that has seen better days. In my experience, they are not timeless but do in fact expire.
I am still searching for a trench that doesn't make me look matronly... le sigh.
Susan I am intrigued by that red J Peterman dress on the left. One because I didn't realise as a foreigner that Peterman was FOR REALS and not just on Seinfeld, and two because... wow, it's so elegant. It reminds me of that lady who used to be editor of Vogue in the 50s...
I'm pretty good with most everything on the list. I'd love to find the perfect black skirt and the perfect white jeans. I have a toddler and soon to have a newborn - and I wear my (maternity) winter white cords all the time! I do love me some Oprah but I am going to pass on the white denim jacket. I love my dark denim jacket, though. It's the perfect spring/fall accessory.
I'd like Oprah to list how many of each of these garments she has.
I have all but the tunic, and my only cashmere is a black turtleneck, so I'm double dipping on that one.
White jeans aren't so hard to wear. I have a pair of AT Loft winter white cords and some white jean capris for summer and always get compliments when I wear them. Go for it!
I own 3,6, 7, 9, and 10.
I only have the dark jeans and the LBD. I've been looking for a great trench, and could use some black trousers and maybe a skirt, but otherwise I don't think this list really works for me. Does a turtleneck really work for the "well-endowed"? I've been looking for more v-necks and the like to de-emphasize the boobage.
Real Simple has a better list. "The Essentials for a Well Balanced Wardrobe"
