Today's shoes, and a query about socks

Embellished gold ballet flats. No socks.
Now that winter is approaching, what kind of socks/hosiery do you recommend one should wear with casual heels and jeans? I have a pair of red Mary Janes with a 2 inch heel and am at a loss as to what color socks or hosiery I should pair with them for winter. I feel silly wearing a coat and scarf, but no socks. What's the rule?
Maria
In fall, a woman's fancy turns to socks. Of course.
I am a big fan of going without socks for as long as is humanly possible, but I realize that this is only really practical in certain climates. Eventually, no matter where you live, there will come a day when you are bound to put on some socks, lest you spend the day with blue feet. Which is NOT pretty.
Match your sock to you trousers, for the longest possible leg line. Socks that match your shoe but not your pants will cut your legs off at the ankle (or wherever the sock is visible) and make you look stumpy. If you are wearing jeans, choose a neutral sock in a shade that is as dark as the jeans; black or dark gray socks are fine with dark rinse jeans, for example.
The same rule applies to skirts and bright colored shoes; match tights to your skirts, both to lengthen the leg line and to highlight your beautiful shoes, which will provide a terrific pop of color at the end of a long, dark leg.
Avoid patterned socks and bright contrasting colored socks. And for the love of all that is holy, NO theme or holiday socks. I am BEGGING you. Please.

Wow! Once again you read my mind. (How do you do that? It's kind of freaking me out.) I was just this weekend standing at the sock rack confused about what color socks to buy for jeans. Great advice. (How have I lived for this long without knowing this!!!) Also, on a slight but relevant tangent - the fruits of the 30-day photo experiment are starting to show! I'm shopping with so much more awareness! I actually passed over several things this weekend that were okay but not great and not what I needed! It's informed shopping! Yay!
Okay, Susan, I admit to occasionally pairing subtly striped or patterned socks with solid colored shoes. But absolutely no holiday socks. Eeek!
I am just on of those people that loves to break the rules when it comes to socks. I very rarely wear plain socks- only when I am going to be somewhere (shoe shopping, a friends with a no-shoe rule) where everyone will see my socks do I wear plain ones. I love knowing that I have funky socks hiding under my pants and shoes.
My one pair of 'holiday' socks came from Target, are knee highs, and are blue with snowmen on them. Whenever I wear them, people ask why I would wear 'Christmas' socks when I am Jewish. And that's exactly why I wear them, for the combo of irony and confusion.
i think the snowman post (above me) is from my sister, so HI AISHA :D
i find the irony in your post when i posted about funky socks today in my blog! (i just bought pinstriped thigh highs, of all things to have)
Ok, this still leaves me clueless about what I wanted to wear today which is a sweater with my a-line jean skirt and flats. What color tights would I wear with a jean skirt?
You girls are KILLING ME with the patterned socks. Although Aisha made me laugh with her Jewish Christmas socks.
Alyssa, go with tights that are the same shade as the skirt -- dark denim = dark tights (black or brown are both fine).
You can also match the tights to the shoes, if that helps. Anything to keep that leg line as uninterrupted as possible.
Oh no! It seems I'm a rule-breaker today. I've matched my tights to my boots. Gasp!
Even though I should be hanging my head in shame, I will be posting to the appropriate Flickr groups tonight ...
Oh BOOTS are a whole other thing.
Match your tights to your boots. Again, to keep from cutting your legs in half.
I love the shoes!! One question on the sock subject: would sheer pantyhose be ok or is that a huge fashion no-no? I try not to go out in shoes that pose this dilemma, and it doesn't happen often in Texas that we have a need for sock and fancy shoes, so I guess I am lucky.
Sheer hose are fine, if you like the look of bare legs but not the ACTUAL bare legs.
Make sure the hose are the same color as your skin (match them to the skin on your arms for the most natural look) and that they fit properly, especially with flats (to avoid baggy ankles).
And please, no panty hose with peep toes. Bare feet or tights.
That is all.
When I must, I like nude fishnets. They aren't for every occasion or outfit, but they can certainly funkify or sassify a pair of cute shoes or skirt. Try them! They are far less striptease than you might expect.
OK, I went out on the preschool drop-off this a.m. with patterned ballet flats and no socks, even though the windchill is 23 degrees. I just dread the shift to winter socks and shoes. When you live in MN, winter socks and shoes pretty much always mean thick wooly socks and big, sturdy shoes (think Dansko closed-back clogs) or boots (and I don't mean pointy-toed high-heeled boots--have you ever tried to traverse a snowbank-piled curb from car to school in heels?). Yuck--I hate how frumpy and clunky I end up feeling--and being.
I will defy you are least once and wear my black cashmere socks with silver snowflakes on them SEVERAL TIMES.
Great advice and adorable shoes-- though have to say the whole "flats" thing kills my arches and my calves, plus I feel like I am 8 years old.
I'm using NABLOPOMO as 30 days of shoes at my site.

hi guys ... I was very pleased to read the information in this article ... was of great interest and would love to get a lot more information about "Today's shoes, and a query about socks"
I wear my square toe ballet flats year around barefooted even when it is cold out. I wear them barefooted for style and comfort.
